假如 + hypothesis，(S) 就… | 万一 + mishap，(S) 就/怎么办
Two ways to introduce a hypothesis:
• 假如 = "if, suppose": a more written 如果 for a neutral hypothesis.
• 万一 = "in case, what if" (literally "one in ten thousand"): an unlikely and unwanted scenario, used to plan for trouble: 万一下雨怎么办？
The second clause often has 就 or 怎么办.
Examples
假如有机会，我想去西藏看看。
Jiǎrú yǒu jīhuì, wǒ xiǎng qù Xīzàng kànkan.If I get the chance, I'd like to visit Tibet.
多带点儿钱吧，万一不能刷卡呢？
Duō dài diǎnr qián ba, wànyī bù néng shuā kǎ ne?Take some extra cash, in case cards aren't accepted.
万一护照丢了，就马上联系大使馆。
Wànyī hùzhào diū le, jiù mǎshàng liánxì dàshǐguǎn.If you happen to lose your passport, contact the embassy immediately.
Common mistakes
✗ 万一我中了大奖… → 万一 is for risks, not good luck → ✓ 假如/要是我中了大奖…
✗ 假如…所以… → ✓ 假如…就…。
