之 is the classical ancestor of 的. It survives in modern writing in set forms:
• …之一 = "one of…": 世界上最长的河之一.
• 百分之 X = X%; 三分之一 = one third.
• A 之 N in titles and set phrases: 中国之行 (a trip to China), 成功之路, 无价之宝.
• 之前 / 之后 / 之间 / 之中: formal counterparts of 以前、以后、中间….
Examples
长城是世界上最有名的建筑之一。
Chángchéng shì shìjiè shang zuì yǒumíng de jiànzhù zhī yī.The Great Wall is one of the most famous structures in the world.
在两千多年之前，这里是一个重要的港口。
Zài liǎng qiān duō nián zhīqián, zhèlǐ shì yí ge zhòngyào de gǎngkǒu.Over two thousand years ago, this was an important port.
大约三分之一的人参加了这次活动。
Dàyuē sān fēn zhī yī de rén cānjiā le zhè cì huódòng.About a third of the people took part in the event.
Common mistakes
✗ Misplacing 之一: ✓ 他是我的朋友之一; ✗ 他是之一朋友 → 之一 always goes at the end.
✗ 一之三 for "a third" → ✓ 三分之一 (denominator first!).
