【一02】能愿动词“会”

Subject + (不) 会 + Verb
会 (huì) expresses a skill acquired by learning: speaking a language, driving, singing, swimming… It's the “can” of “I can swim”.
我会说汉语 (I can speak Chinese). 他不会开车 (he can't drive, tone: bú huì).
Soften it with 一点儿 (a little): 我会说一点儿汉语.
Question: 你会写汉字吗？ or 你会不会写汉字？ Short answer: 会 / 不会.
(会 can also express future likelihood, “will probably…”, covered at level 2.)
Examples
我不会说中文。
Wǒ bú huì shuō Zhōngwén.I can't speak Chinese.
你会写汉字吗？
Nǐ huì xiě Hànzì ma?Can you write Chinese characters?
我会说一点儿汉语。
Wǒ huì shuō yìdiǎnr Hànyǔ.I speak a little Chinese.
我哥哥会开车。
Wǒ gēge huì kāichē.My older brother can drive.
Common mistakes
✗ 我会一点儿说汉语 → ✓ 我会说一点儿汉语 (一点儿 goes before the object).
✗ 我能说汉语 for a basic skill → prefer ✓ 我会说汉语 (see 能).
