In a non-question sentence, a question word can mean something vague or unknown: 什么 = something, 谁 = someone, 哪儿 = somewhere.
I feel like eating something.
I think I've seen him somewhere.
If the sentence ends with 吗, it's a yes/no question: 你想吃点儿什么吗? = Do you want something to eat?

(What do you want to eat?) (Do you want something to eat?). The 吗 changes everything.
