V着V着 describes an action that has been going on for a while, during which something else happens, often unnoticed: 走着走着,天就黑了 (we walked and walked, and night fell).
Use a one-syllable verb (走, 说, 看, 听, 想, 聊…); the second part often contains 就, 突然 or 了.
It's a very narrative device, perfect for storytelling.
Examples
孩子听着听着就睡着了。
Háizi tīng zhe tīng zhe jiù shuìzháo le.The child fell asleep while listening.
我们聊着聊着,突然下起雨来了。
Wǒmen liáo zhe liáo zhe, tūrán xià qi yǔ lai le.We were chatting away when it suddenly started to rain.
她说着说着就哭了。
Tā shuō zhe shuō zhe jiù kū le.She burst into tears as she talked.
Common mistakes
✗ 休息着休息着 → use a one-syllable verb. ✓ 坐着坐着。
✗ Using V着V着 for two deliberate simultaneous actions → that's 一边……一边…….
