为了……而……: doing something for the sake of (and 因 + noun)

为了 + goal + 而 + verb says that you do V for the sake of that goal: 为了这次谈判而准备了三个月 (to prepare for three months for this negotiation). 而 links the goal to the verb; it is the formal version of the plain 为了 + goal, subject + verb (hsk3-g17), as in 为了这次谈判，他准备了三个月. The group can also describe a noun: 为了讨论环境问题而召开的会议 (a meeting called to discuss…).
Cause is a different slot. 因 + noun is the written “because of, owing to”: 因公司业务需要, 因病请假. With 而, the cause leads to a result: 因汇率波动而调整价格 (hsk6-g16).
To remember: 为了 = goal (what you aim at), 因 = cause (what happened). Written register: reports, contracts, speeches.
Examples
很多人为了梦想而离开了家乡。
Hěn duō rén wèile mèngxiǎng ér líkāi le jiāxiāng.Many people leave home for the sake of a dream.
他为了这次谈判而准备了三个月。
Tā wèile zhè cì tánpàn ér zhǔnbèi le sān ge yuè.He prepared for three months for this negotiation.
我们为了保证质量而增加了一道检验。
Wǒmen wèile bǎozhèng zhìliàng ér zēngjiā le yí dào jiǎnyàn.To guarantee quality, we added one more inspection step.
因公司业务需要，他下个月要去上海工作。
Yīn gōngsī yèwù xūyào, tā xià ge yuè yào qù Shànghǎi gōngzuò.Because the company's business requires it, he will work in Shanghai next month.
航班因天气原因而推迟了两个小时。
Hángbān yīn tiānqì yuányīn ér tuīchí le liǎng ge xiǎoshí.The flight was delayed by two hours because of the weather.
这是一次为了讨论环境问题而召开的会议。
Zhè shì yí cì wèile tǎolùn huánjìng wèntí ér zhàokāi de huìyì.This is a meeting called to discuss environmental problems.
Common mistakes
✗ 他为了生病而没来 → ✓ 他因生病没来 / 他因病而没来 (为了 states a goal, 因 a cause).
✗ 而为了比赛努力 → ✓ 为了比赛而努力 (而 sits between the goal phrase and the verb).
